When Can You Become a Canadian Citizen?
In general, you may apply for Canadian citizenship when you meet the eligibility requirements, including:
- You are a permanent resident of Canada.
- You have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) during the 5 years preceding your application. Some days spent in Canada before obtaining permanent residence, such as as a student or temporary worker, may count as a half-day, up to a maximum of 365 days.
- You have filed your income tax returns if required by law.
- If you are between 18 and 54 years old, you must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French and pass the citizenship test (unless an exception applies). [caci-bc.org]
Please bring the following documents with you during your visit:
- Permanent residence card (valid or expired)
- Valid driver’s license or valid RAMQ card
- Passport valid for a period of 5 years prior to application
- Identity photo (Canadian passport size)
- Proof of language, French or English, for any applicant between 18 and 55 years old
